Can You Guess How Many Hours a Day Kids Spend Consuming Media?
In 1991 children spent 3 hours a day watching television. Today they spend more than 7 hours using computers, cell phones, video games, t.v., and other electronic devices. This cuts down the amount of time children spend socializing and exercising. Studies have shown high levels of media use are associated with attention difficulties, school problems, sleep and eating disorders, and obesity.
I worry about how this upward trend affects society as a whole. Are we becoming more and more detached from one another? How can we foster relationships and develop empathy when we spend so much time attached to our electronic devices?
